Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary (SRS) in Way Kambas National Park (WKNP)
Andatu is the first Sumatran rhino born at the SRS WKNP on June 23, 2012. His birth marked a historic moment in Sumatran rhino conservation. Not only was he the first Sumatran rhino ever born at the SRS WKNP, but he was also the first Sumatran rhino born in captivity in Asia in 124 years. The last captive birth in Asia had occurred in 1889 at the Calcutta Zoo in India.
This male Sumatran rhino is the offspring of Andalas and Ratu. His name, “Andatu,” was given by the Indonesian Minister of Forestry, meaning “the child of Andalas and Ratu,” and it can also be interpreted as “Anugerah dari Tuhan” or “a gift from God.”
In 2022, he also became a father when the calf from his pairing with Rosa was born, a female named Sedah Mirah.
