Artificial Insemination and Semen Collection in SRS Way Kambas
Artificial Insemination (AI) is a deliberate injection of spermatozoa into oviduct for the purpose of achieving a pregnancy through fertilisation by means of other than copulation. Artificial insemination is a common practice in the breeding of cattles to increase the number of animals like cows, sheeps, and etc. For rhinos, AI is a relatively new reproduction technic – this technic was first implemented in Hongaria in 2006 – yet, it has been implemented frequently to rhinos. SRS, through this breeding program, has applied Artificial Insemination method to female rhinos (namely Bina) and will probably apply it to another rhino (namely Ratu and Rosa). As already known, Bina haven’t bred yet during their staying in SRS.
For male Sumatran Rhino, we have semen collection program that regurarly collected from male sumatran rhinos in SRS Way Kambas, there are Andalas, Andatu, and Harapan. These rhinos have been proven to be productive and able to produce good quality of spermatozoa. SRS way kambas has successfully collected male sumatran rhinos semen straw and stored it in nitrogen liquid at SRS Way Kambas laboratorium.
